The trap

Do not treat a suction-cup handhold, towel rail or fixed-height stool as a substitute for a properly installed grab bar. A 2025 lab study found suction-cup handholds failed on common tub wall surfaces within 28 days.

The better move

Choose equipment for the actual movement and fit: a grab bar mounted into studs or rated anchors, a chair that fits the user, or a transfer bench for the tub wall. An occupational therapist can check the setup after a fall or surgery.

Three checks before buying

  1. Confirm mounting method and manufacturer weight rating before relying on a bar.
  2. Measure the person and the tub; check seat height, leg adjustment and footprint.
  3. Check who will install the equipment and whether the surface can hold it safely.
