The trap

Skip a fixed-height cane ordered from a photo or a flashy multi-function cane without checking grip, tip and fit. A cane is not a substitute for a walker if more support is needed.

The better move

Start with an adjustable cane and have a clinician or physical therapist check the height and which hand to use. The MedlinePlus guide explains that a cane belongs in the hand opposite the weaker leg.

Three checks before buying

Check the handle feels comfortable to grip.
Make sure the rubber tip is intact and replace it when worn.
Ask whether one cane gives enough support before buying extras.
