The trap

Do not buy a personal sound amplification product (PSAP) as a treatment for hearing loss. OTC hearing aids are for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss; severe or profound loss needs professional help.

The better move

Look for an OTC hearing aid with the required package labeling and a workable return policy. Read the FDA’s red-flag symptoms first: ear pain, drainage, sudden change or one-sided hearing problems deserve a medical check, not a checkout.

Three checks before buying

  1. Check who the device is intended for on the package.
  2. Check the seller’s return window and any restocking fee.
  3. Ask whether setup requires a smartphone the wearer can use.

The evidence

FDA: OTC hearing aidsIntended users, red flags, package labeling and returns.
FDA: hearing aids and sound amplifiersMedical device versus personal sound amplifier.
What we have not done

Not a hearing test or recommendation for a particular device. No hearing aid has been hands-on tested here.
