The trap

Skip a dispenser that claims it will make medication errors impossible. A locked device or reminder cannot catch duplicate active ingredients, drug interactions or an out-of-date prescription list.

The better move

Ask a pharmacist to review every prescription, over-the-counter medicine and supplement together. The National Institute on Aging recommends a written list; weekly pill boxes, charts and timers are possible reminders once the regimen is clear.

Three checks before buying

  1. Make a list of the name, dose and time for every medicine and supplement.
  2. Check with the pharmacist before moving pills out of their original bottles.
  3. Make sure the person can read labels and open containers; ask for larger labels or easier caps when needed.
