The night-light placement test

A brighter package is not the same as a safer path to the bathroom.

The trap

Skip a decorative lamp that leaves the route from bed to bathroom dark, or a plug-in light that blocks the only outlet needed for safer equipment. Poor lighting and loose rugs remain fall hazards.

The better move

Walk the actual route after dark. The NIA recommends night lights near the bed and in the bathroom, and lighting that makes stairs and hallways visible; motion-activated plug-in lights can help illuminate pathways.

Three checks before buying

  1. Check the bed-to-bathroom route in darkness, not at noon.
  2. Place light switches or night lights where they can be reached before walking.
  3. Remove loose rugs and clutter; light alone does not remove a trip hazard.

The evidence

NIA: preventing falls at home, room by roomBathroom and bedroom night lights, halls, stairs and rugs.
CDC: preventing older-adult fallsFall prevention steps.
What we have not done

No particular light, lux level or motion sensor has been evaluated here.
