The trap

Skip the one-size-fits-all magnifier bundle if someone is still struggling to read despite their glasses. A different magnifier may not address the cause or the task.

The better move

Ask an eye-care professional about low-vision services. The National Eye Institute describes magnifiers, brighter lighting, and other aids chosen for the person’s vision and daily tasks.

Three checks before buying

  1. Name the exact task: medicine label, phone screen or recipe.
  2. Try the lighting and contrast where the task happens.
  3. Ask for a low-vision evaluation when ordinary glasses are not enough.
